Monograms of
Distinction New Manufacturing

Monograms of
Distinction was started
in 1984 with one embroidery machine set up in the dining room of our home.
The business grew; we bought more machines, renovated the basement, hired
3 employees and sold personalized crib blankets by mail order for the next
several years.
Eventually it became more and more difficult to get a
quality blanket suitable for embroidery. One supplier even told us that
they would not sell to us anymore because they couldn’t provide the
quality we required. So, we needed to find an
alternative… |
In 1992 we found a mill that would sell us rolls of
fabric that we could then cut and sew into crib blankets. We hired a local
sewing contractor to make our blankets from this fabric, but a few years later
they went out of business. Meanwhile, we were now selling to children’s stores
nationwide, and needed a reliable source of quality blankets.
We found a contractor
out of state and they made our blankets
for several more years. However, the quality of sewing wasn’t always up to our
high standards, and delivery was often slow. At this time we also decided to
bring the binding of the crib blankets in house. We bought binding machines, set
them up in our living room and learned how to bind blankets. We hired two people
to do the binding – they worked at night in our living room after the day shift
had gone home!
By this time, the business had taken over our home, and we
decided we needed to move the business to a separate location. In 1995, we
purchased a 2,600 square foot building and moved our entire operation – by this
time we had 4 embroidery machines as well as two binding machines and eight
employees.
During the next 5 years
we saw many changes in the textile industry – and the southern mill that was our
sole source of blanket fabric told us they were closing. Once again we were
desperate to find fabric to make quality crib blankets to fill our ever-increasing orders. A mill in Maine supplied our fabric for
several years until they filed Chapter 11 early in 2001.
This time, we decided to
investigate other fabrics suitable for crib blankets – and discovered that polyester fleece was the perfect alternative.
It was available from several sources, the quality was consistent and most
important, it embroidered beautifully! In April of 2001 we started making our
blankets out of fleece.
In September of 2001 we moved
to an 8,000 sq. ft. facility which allows us to maintain a large inventory of
fabric, as well as sewn crib blankets. We now also manufacture other baby
items and can offer these high quality products such as hooded towels, pillowcases
and receiving blankets along with our crib blankets to children's stores
and gift shops nationwide.
